Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with you.

About the Hail Mary Prayer
Luke 1:28
The prayer started as two biblical verses and evolved into the prayer we know today.
It began with Luke 1:28, the annunciation by the Archangel Gabriel.
And he came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!”
Luke 1:41-42
Then it continued with the words of St. Elizabeth when Mary visited her, as recorded in Luke 1:41-42.
And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
The Second Part of the Prayer
By the 11th Century, it was a widespread prayer among Christians. In 1261 Pope Urban VI added the Name of Jesus to the prayer.
The second part of the prayer,
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
began in 1426 with St. Bernardine of Siena in a homily. In 1568, Pope Pius V approved the complete Hail Mary prayer we are familiar with today.
The Center of the Prayer
The center of gravity in the Hail Mary, the hinge as it were which joins its two parts, is the Name of Jesus. (Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 33).
St. John Paul II explained that we contemplate the connection to the mysteries of Christ when we recite the Hail Mary prayer.
