The Mysteries

Benefits of Rosary Mysteries

The Mysteries of the Rosary add new layers of meaning to this prayer.  They help us walk with Jesus and Mary through the various events of their lives.

How Are They Organized?

The Rosary Mysteries are divided into four categories: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious. Each of these categories has five mysteries, which is the same as the number of rosary decades or groups of ten beads.

When Do We Pray Them?

We pray the mysteries of the rosary on different weekdays.

  • Sunday – Glorious Mysteries
  • Monday  – Joyful Mysteries
  • Tuesday – Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Wednesday – Glorious Mysteries
  • Thursday – Luminous Mysteries
  • Friday – Sorrowful Mysteries
  • Saturday- Joyful Mysteries

The Newest Mysteries

On October 16, 2002, St. John Paul II added to the rosary mysteries in his Apostolic Letter,  Rosarium Virginis Mariae. The Luminous Mysteries reflect on key events during the public ministry of Jesus. He felt that this would make the rosary “more fully a compendium of the Gospel”. (para 19) As a result, he adjusted the days for the mysteries.

When were the Mysteries of Light Added?

On October 16, 2002, St. John Paul II added to the rosary mysteries in his Apostolic Letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae.  The Mysteries of Light reflect on key events during the public ministry of Jesus.  He felt that this would make the rosary “more fully a compendium of the Gospel“.
