We typically use a medium to heavy-gauge nickel silver wire, as well as brass, bronze, and sterling silver. To ensure a cohesive look, we match every component to the wire: nickel-coloured parts for nickel silver, gold-toned for brass, and genuine bronze or sterling silver for their respective designs.

The photo compares two rosaries to illustrate long-term durability. The manufactured white-bead version, purchased at the 2017 Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, shows opening loops and wire tarnish that has darkened the inside of the beads. In contrast, my handmade family rosary looks new. Despite being at least 12 years old and well-prayed, the metal has remained bright, and the loops are still strong and secure.
Many, if not most, mass-produced rosaries have simple links shaped like a bent teardrop or an upper case letter “D” with the cut end closed near the bead hole. Over time, the weight of the beads and the movements of prayer loosen that cut end. Once it works open, the sections disconnect. The same classic chain-link design crafted by hand with sturdier wire and rounded links fares just fine—my grandchildren have given them plenty of “test drives!”
Wire-wrapping is considered the gold standard for durability in rosary craftsmanship. It prevents rosaries from ever unhooking. The bead is secured on either side by wrapping the wire around the center stem. While machines use thin wire that can snap, I use sturdy wire that stays secure. I value symmetry so much that if a wrap isn’t right, I feel the need to redo it. I can’t just unroll it, even with pliers; I have to cut it off and start over.

There is an unexpected structural benefit each time an artisan turns a loop with hand-held pliers. The curved wire work-hardens. In other words, the loop becomes structurally stronger at the curve. This increased resilience allows the rosary to turn smoothly, as your fingers move from bead to bead during prayer. Because these loops are rounded and work-hardened, they function like the smooth gears of a clock – moving with mechanical precision rather than catching on angled or weak links found in some mass-produced rosaries. This makes the physical movements of prayer effortless, freeing the mind and heart to pray more deeply.
The most common points of breakage occur where the strands of beads attach to the Crucifix and center. While many manufacturers rely on thin, flimsy rings that stretch, loosen, and even snag on clothing, we use heavy-duty rings so rigid that it takes two pairs of pliers to open and close. Alternatively, I secure the connections with hand-wrapped bows. They have loops at each end to connect to components with either a bead or a solid stem at the center. A reliable rosary is built with sturdy connectors.

The reliability of rosaries with strung beads depends on the quality of the cord material and the firmness of the knots. I often repair rosaries with inferior, fraying cord manufactured overseas. To prevent this type of wear, I use a more resilient cord –the same quality of nylon cord used for commercial fishing nets, and our Paracord is strictly American-made. They hold the knots securely without making the rosary stiff. I tighten every knot and heat-seal the ends to create a secure plug that prevents unravelling. This attention to detail ensures a sturdy rosary.
I choose the metals or cord on our rosaries to match the weight and nature of the beads. While lightweight wood beads are suited for either cord or wire construction, gemstones and glass require sturdy wire. For hematite and stainless steel – our heaviest beads – we utilize an even heavier gauge of wire to prevent the links from stretching with use. Paracord provides a rugged, reliable alternative for beads with wide enough holes, while our resilient twisted nylon cord complements our Euro Wood beads perfectly.

The rosary pictured has enough room for large hands, even with 6 mm beads. In our looped designs, the bead itself serves as the “handle,” ensuring that even larger hands find a comfortable, secure grip when paired with large beads. By balancing spacing and bead size, prayer on these handmade rosaries becomes effortless.
