BIO OF SAINT BLAISE

The Feast of St. Blaise is on February 3rd

Saint Blaise was a physician in the early 3rd Century. He decided to be in the service of God as a physician of souls. As Bishop of Armenia (in present-day Asia), he inspired holiness by his words and example. Saint Blaise was known for his physical and spiritual healings. As a result, people travelled from a distance to seek his help.

HIS WELL-KNOWN MIRACLE

One of his best-known miracles was while he was in prison. A mother with a young child choking on a fishbone (or dying of a throat disease) requested his help. St. Blaise offered up prayers and then healed the child. As a result, he became known as the patron saint of throat illnesses and choking. His martyrdom was in the year 316, and his canonization was pre-congregation.*

*To declare a saint, proofs of holiness are investigated. In pre-Congregation years (before 1588), it was the role of the local bishop. By the late 11th Century, councils looked after it. In 1634, Pope Urban VIII made it the role of the Apostolic See. Pope Sixtus V established the Congregation of Rites in 1588. Pope Paul VI (1969) and Pope John Paul II (1983) reorganized it. It is now the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.

BLESSING OF THE THROATS

The Blessing of the Throats takes place on February 3rd in Catholic churches. The priest says a blessing while holding two crossed candles on either side of the throat.

Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop, and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

(prayer at the blessing of the throats)

Some Thoughts

Our longing to draw closer to God is deeply rooted in our hearts. But, we may struggle when we pray for healing, yet do not experience it. Part of loving God is to pray for the strength to bear the effects of our illness. The other part is trusting in God’s will.  We can pray for God to heal us if it is His will.
