History of the Devotion
The devotion to Notre Dame du Cap began with miracles and renewed local prayer of the rosary at Trois-Rivieres, Quebec. After over a century without a pastor, Fr. Luc Desilets came to a small church in Quebec. It saddened him that the parishioners no longer prayed the rosary. One day, he heard an odd noise. He found a pig loose in the church, chewing on a rosary. After that, the pastor began praying the rosary after each Mass. He also encouraged everyone to pray at home.
Soon, plans for a larger church were underway. They had planned to move the stones across the frozen St. Lawrence River, but it was a mild year. They prayed the rosary all winter and in March, an ice bridge formed. It lasted from the feast of St. Joseph to the feast of the Annunciation. This Rosary Bridge miracle allowed them to build the church.
Ten years later, a statue of Mary opened its eyes. Two priests and a disabled man witnessed it while they were praying.
The Oldest Marian Shrine in Canada
Every year over 400,000 pilgrims flock to the shrine to pray and find inspiration. The walls have crutches left behind by pilgrims who experienced healing. It is the oldest Marian shrine in Canada. In 1904, Pope Pius X sent a delegate to crown the statue. St. John Paul II visited the shrine in September 1984.
The Chaplet
The chaplet can be prayed on a rosary. For a downloadable PDF of the Chaplet of Our Lady of the Cape, click here.
TIP
Wire-wrapped rosaries will not come unhooked. The design will sometimes result in a temporary kink. There are two ways to resolve it: a gentle shake; or lifting and turning the section by hand.

How to Pray the Rosary With More Devotion
Before You Start Praying
Prepare your heart. Ask for the grace to pray the rosary in a profound and meaningful way. Be open to the spiritual journey as it unfolds.
As our Blessed Mother leads us more closely to her Son, our hearts will expand. Little by little, we will have a more vibrant faith that will transform our lives.
Take Your Time
If you find yourself rushing through the rosary prayers, slow down. Prayer is how we build our relationship with God and our Blessed Mother. It is an expression of love. Why rush through that? When we savour the experience of prayer, it reaches more deeply into our hearts.
What is Prayer?
Prayer is not about getting through all of the prayers. It is about listening. To listen in prayer means being open to God’s voice speaking in our hearts, where He can encourage and guide us.
