About Rosaries

With its roots in the 13th Century, the rosary is the most well-known prayer in the Catholic Church.

What They Look Like

A rosary has 59 beads in total. It begins with a Crucifix with a single bead, a group of three, and another single one.  A center medal with three loops connects the upper strand of the rosary. There are five groups of ten beads, divided by single beads.

A pocket or decade rosary has ten beads and a single, in either a strand or loop. Some use 20-decade rosaries to pray all of the mysteries every day.

Why Rosary Beads are Helpful

Rosary beads identify the prayers that we say. For example, we pray an Our Father on the single beads and the Hail Mary on the grouped beads. The prayers, by their gentle repetition, help calm our hearts. Then, we can enter deeper into the richness of our faith.

Why are There Rosary Mysteries?

The Mysteries of the Rosary add new layers of meaning to this prayer.
They help us walk with Jesus and Mary through the various events of their lives.

How are They Organized?

The Rosary Mysteries are divided into 4 categories: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious. Each category has 5 mysteries, the same as the number of rosary decades or groups of 10 beads.

New Mysteries Added in 2002

On October 16, 2002, St. John Paul II added to the rosary mysteries. (Rosarium Virginis Mariae) The Luminous Mysteries reflect on key events during the public ministry of Jesus. He felt this would make the rosary “more fully a compendium of the Gospel”. (para 19) As a result, he adjusted the days for the mysteries.

How do We Pray with the Mysteries?

At the beginning of each decade, the mystery is announced, followed by a short pause for reflection. For those who pray a scriptural rosary, a Bible passage is read before each decade or bead.

When Do We Pray Which Mysteries?

We meditate on specific mysteries of the rosary on different weekdays. The reason for this is to pray them at least once per week.

When Rosaries Began and How They Changed

The First Five-Decade Rosaries

Pope Pius V established the devotion to the Dominican Rosary on  September 17, 1569. It was the original 5-decade rosary.

Wood and Glass Bead Rosaries

Beading with wire is not new.  Since ancient Egyptian times, it has been a way to make jewellery.  These same techniques work for making rosaries.  At first, they had wood and seed beads.  Rosaries changed over the centuries that followed.

Glass bead rosaries became popular in the 20th Century. The Czech Republic started exporting glass beads in the 1920s. Rosaries soon became more colourful.

Post-Internet

Once the internet launched on August 9, 1991, a worldwide market opened up. Now, rosary makers can buy gemstone beads and other parts from anywhere worldwide.

Today’s rosaries are more artistic and inspiring than they have ever been.
