Prayer to Jesus Crucified

Sorrowful Mysteries and Prayer before a Crucifix, painting by Murillo, stations of the Cross, way of the cross, station 12

Behold, O kind and most sweet Jesus,

I cast myself on my knees in Your sight,

and with the most fervent desire of my soul,

I pray and beseech You

that You would impress upon my heart

lively sentiments of faith, hope, and charity,

with a true repentance for my sins,

and a firm desire of amendment,

Prayer to Jesus, Crucified painting

while with deep affection and grief of soul,

I ponder within myself and mentally contemplate

Your five most precious wounds;

having before my eyes

that which David spoke in prophecy of You, O good Jesus:

“They pierced my hands

and my feet;

they have numbered all my bones.”

About the Prayer to Jesus Crucified

In Most Catholic Prayer Books

The Prayer to Jesus Crucified is another name for The Prayer before a Crucifix.  It is in most Catholic prayer books.  A unique feature is that it includes an excerpt from Psalm 22.

Plenary Indulgence

Pope Pius XI granted it an indulgence on February 2, 1934.  We can gain a plenary indulgence when we recite it on a Friday during the Season of Lent. There are conditions. First, we need to be in front of an image of Jesus on the Cross.  Then we need to meet the usual requirements for an indulgence.

Partial Indulgence

On the other days, a partial indulgence can be gained once per day for oneself or a soul in Purgatory.

To Obtain an Indulgence

The usual requirements are the same as for all indulgences. We must be in a state of grace, take part in the Sacraments of Confession and the Eucharist, and pray for the Pope’s intentions.  Click for more details.
