We made our heirloom Lapis Lazuli Rosary with Grade A gemstones. Each bead is Lazurite with trace elements of other minerals. The white patterns are Calcite, and the flecks of gold are Pyrite. This precious stone adorned pharaohs, kings, and queens for more than six millennia as jewelry and cosmetics. Cleopatra wore it as an eye shadow. Artists ground it as pigment for blue paint. Michelangelo, for example, used it for the Sistine Chapel. At the time, it was worth more than gold. Recently, mines have depleted this rare gemstone. As a result, this is a limited-edition rosary.
The Rosary
We combined these remarkable 6mm gemstones with the strength of wire-wrapped sterling silver. We capped the 8mm Our Father beads and topped them with smaller end beads.

TIP: Wire-wrapped rosaries will not come unhooked. The design will sometimes result in a temporary kink. There are two ways to resolve it: a gentle shake; or lifting and turning the section by hand.
Heirloom Quality Sterling Silver Rosaries
The Construction
Since gemstones and crystal beads are generally heavier, they add stress to the connections. Wire-wrapping secures and strengthens a rosary. It also adds a comfortable space between the beads.
Rosaries should be symmetrical. We do the extra work needed to ensure that the sections will line up.
How it is Attached
Since most Sterling silver jump rings will open, we prefer wrapped bows. One type we use has a stem surrounded by stacks of looped wire. There are open loops on each end. The other is shorter, with a small bead at the center. Both will do the extra work needed to secure a rosary.
The Beads
Among gemstone beads, there is a wide range of value. The more pure the stone, the higher the value. Another deciding factor is its rarity. Recently, the high demand for gemstones has depleted some of the world’s mines. The rarest stones are the most valuable. Yet what matters most is how much the beads inspire you to pray.
The Metal Parts
When we label one of our rosaries as sterling silver, every metal part is solid sterling silver.
The chain is heavy-duty for the movements of the rosary during prayer.
Storage
After investing in an heirloom rosary, it is a good idea to store it in a rosary case. One with a secure closure will protect the wire and beads from damage.
As shown in the photo, I use a piece of anti-tarnish paper with mine. Another option is a silica gel pack (poisonous) or a piece of chalk to help keep it dry.
