BIO OF SAINT NICHOLAS
The Feast of St. Nicholas is on December 6th
Saint Nicholas (345-352) was born to Christian parents in present-day Turkey. He was Bishop of Myra during a time of Christian persecution. Because of this, he spent time in prison. His release was during the reign of Constantine. In a well-known story, St. Nicholas helped three girls have a better future. He dropped sacks of gold coins through the window of their house of three girls each night for three nights. That way, their father could pay their dowries. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of several countries and cities. He is also the patron of mariners, merchants, children, and more. In the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany, children receive gifts on his feast day. In North America, he is Santa Claus, who delivers presents on Christmas Eve.
CANONIZATION
St. Nicholas was declared a saint pre-congregation. To declare a saint, proofs of holiness are investigated. In pre-Congregation years (before 1588), it was the role of the local bishop. By the late 11th Century, councils looked after it. In 1634, Pope Urban VIII made it the role of the Apostolic See. Pope Sixtus V established the Congregation of Rites in 1588. Pope Paul VI (1969) and Pope John Paul II (1983) reorganized it. It is now the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.

The Christmas Tree Effect is a new urban expression. It describes the sudden surprise and joy of opening a present, as on Christmas day. St. Nicholas hoped for more than that initial reaction. He inspired the tradition of exchanging gifts at Christmas for a different reason. Giving as God gives means something more. The joy of giving is not tied to the reaction of the person receiving the gift. It is a gift of the heart, without strings or expectations. It is simply generous love.
