Opening Prayers
The Step-by-Step Rosary begins here with the opening prayers.
The Opening Prayers of the Rosary
CRUCIFIX: Sign of the Cross and the Apostles’ Creed
FIRST BEAD: Our Father
SET OF 3 BEADS: Hail Mary
CHAIN AFTER 3 BEADS: Glory Be
1. On the Crucifix:
Begin the opening prayers as you hold onto the Crucifix.
Beginning by holding the Crucifix in your hand. Kiss it and make the Sign of the Cross.
1. Say: “In the Name of the Father,” (touch your forehead with the Crucifix);
2. “and of the Son,” (touch your heart with the Crucifix);
3. “and of the Holy Spirit.” (touch your left shoulder and then your right shoulder with the Crucifix);
4. “Amen.” (fold your hands in prayer with a rosary in your hands)
*Kissing the Crucifix is optional. It is a special way that many people choose to make the Sign of the Cross when they pray a rosary.
- Verse: O God come to my aid,
- Response: O Lord, make haste to help me.
I offer this Rosary for… (name who you want to pray for or mention your specific intention)
*Now you will continue with a series of prayers, following along with the beads of your rosary. Let your mind be quieted as you pray so that you can rest in God’s presence and spend time with Him and His Blessed Mother in this powerful prayer.
OPENING PRAYER
2. On the First Bead: Our Father
Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
3. On the Group of 3 Beads: Hail Mary
- First Bead: HAIL MARY *for the virtue of faith
- Second Bead: HAIL MARY *for the virtue of hope
- THIRD BEAD: HAIL MARY *for the virtue of charity
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.*
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen
*Or: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
4. Section of Chain after the 3 Beads: Glory Be
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
It's not time to pray on this bead yet.
