More Details
Our Purple Rosary with Roses has quality Czech glass and metal flower beads. It has 7mm glass beads which are not as common as they used to be. In the mid to late 20th Century, it was popular to use that size of bead to make rosaries. Since the beads were on 16-inch strands, there were 59 beads per strand. That is the exact amount needed to make a rosary.
What we like about these beads is that they give the rosary a medium size. Today, there is a limited selection of these beads on the market.
Fire-Polished Czech Glass
Fire-polished Czech glass beads look like crystal beads but are a fraction of the cost.
History
Glass production began in the Czech Republic (Bohemia) as early as the 12th Century. The technique of fire-polishing glass beads started four centuries later. In Jablonec, a small village a few hours north of Prague, the idea took root.
In the late 1920s, they became the top glass bead exporter worldwide. Today, the Czech Republic continues to lead the glass bead-making industry.
How They are Made
The first step is to combine hot glass with different metal oxides to create the desired colour. Then machines press the hot, softened glass into bead molds.
Finishing Touches
Next, they grind tiny facets into the cooled glass. These angled cuts are what will reflect the light. Next, they directly apply fire to the faceted beads. This step is the traditional fire-polishing method. It gives them a smooth, scratch-resistant finish. Finally, they coat some of them with a finish.
