BIO OF SAINT AUGUSTINE

The First Feast of Saint Augustine was likely on August 28, 1298

St. Augustine (354-430) was the wayward son of St. Monica. After many tears and prayers, her son’s life changed dramatically. In late August of 386, at the age of 31, he converted to Christianity.  He became a theologian and a philosopher as well. From 396 to 430, he was the Bishop of Hippo. One of his most famous works was Confessions. He wrote it circa 400, while he was Bishop. In it, he wrote about his sinful youth and his later conversion.

CANONIZATION

He lived so long ago that his canonization was pre-congregation.*  It wasn’t until 1298 that he earned the title Doctor of the Church.

*To declare a saint, proofs of holiness are investigated. In pre-Congregation years (before 1588), it was the role of the local bishop. By the late 11th Century, councils looked after it. In 1634, Pope Urban VIII made it the role of the Apostolic See. Pope Sixtus V established the Congregation of Rites in 1588. Pope Paul VI (1969) and Pope John Paul II (1983) reorganized it. It is now the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.

You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.

Some Thoughts

Possessions, relationships, or activities can give us temporary happiness. But our hearts are like a jigsaw puzzle with one missing piece that only God can fill.

This intriguing depiction of Saint Augustine with the Spanish title San Agustin, by Antonio Rodríguez, was painted during his lifetime, which was from 1636 to 1691.

Saint Augustine of Hippo wrote these well-loved words in his series of 13 books, Confessions, (Lib. 1,1-2,2.5,5: C.S.E.L. 33, 1-5), which he wrote between 397-400 A.D.
