Holy Spirit Novena: Sixth Day

WEDNESDAY

Begin with the Sign of the Cross.

Understanding

Understanding, as a gift of the Holy Spirit, helps us to grasp the meaning of the truths of our holy religion. By faith, we know them, but by Understanding, we learn to appreciate and relish them. It enables us to penetrate the inner meaning of revealed truths and, through them, to be quickened to the newness of life.

Our faith ceases to be sterile and inactive but inspires a mode of life that bears eloquent testimony to the faith in us; we begin to:

…walk worthy of God in all things pleasing, and increasing in the knowledge of God. (Colossians 1:10)

Novena to the Holy Spirit

Prayer

Come, O Spirit of Understanding, and enlighten our minds, that we may know and believe all the mysteries of salvation; and may merit at last to see the eternal light in Your Light; and in the light of glory to have a clear vision of You and the Father and the Son.  Amen.

Tip

You can start on the second bead of a rosary decade to count the final prayers.

  • Our Father
  • Hail Mary
  • Glory Be (7 times)

Our Father, Who art in Heaven,  hallowed be Thy name;  Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

VERSION 1:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.  Blessed art thou among* women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.

*or “amongst”

VERSION 2:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.  Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.  Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

CREDITS

The LOGO image of Our Lady of Grace is original artwork by Martin Lariviere, 2009, and used with the artist’s permission (my son). It is our exclusive trademark logo image.

A beautifully photographed sky by Donald Tong inspired the website’s colour scheme. Cropped portions of it are the background for the footer Bible verse. He shared it as a free download on pexels.com.

Raphael painted The Sistine Madonna circa (1513-1514). We made circular cut-outs from the original image.

Juan Bautista Maino painted a scene from Pentecost circa 1615 to 1620.

We cropped a Pompeo Batoni painting of the Holy Spirit from circa 1740 to 1743.
