More Details
The inspiration for the Chaplet of Practices is the original strand of beads made by St. Therese of Lisieux. As a child, she began carrying it in her pocket to keep track of her sacrifices. She offered them up at the end of each day as a gift of love to God.
How She Offered her Sacrifices
St. Therese recorded the number of acts of love in her journal. She wrote, “Jesus, I love you.” beside the totals for the day. In the months leading up to her First Communion, she recorded an average of 28 sacrifices daily. She continued this practice for the rest of her life.
White Roses
At the time of this article, St . Therese’s sacrifice beads were on display in her childhood home in Lisieux. It had 30 white beads, a medal of St. Benedict, and a Crucifix strung on a long strand of blue cord. She called them her white roses. She would reach in her pocket and slide them down toward the Crucifix with each little act of love. Each evening, she would slide the beads back up, ready for the next day. She called it her “Chaplet of Practices.” As the idea grew in popularity, they became known as St. Therese Sacrifice Beads or Good Deed Beads. Today’s popular version is shortened to 10 or 11 beads and doubles as a rosary decade.
Our Design
We make the original 30-bead chaplet in both the strand and loop styles. On the loop design, we added a small St. Benedict medal on one side to make it easier to keep going in the same direction. It is delicate enough to fit into a pocket yet large enough to keep track of sacrifices. It is also available with a royal blue cord instead of the light blue we used here.
About Our Handmade Chaplets
Packaging
Each chaplet comes with a sturdy prayer card. It has the full text of the prayers and explains which prayers to say on which beads.
Suggestion
It is a good idea to store your chaplets and prayer cards together. Since chaplets have unique bead groupings and prayers, the prayer card and chaplet need to stay together so that you can continue to use them.
