5 Tips to Start a Routine of Praying the Rosary

1

Begin With a Prayer

Begin with a prayer to ask for the grace to develop a habit of prayer.  It will help prepare our hearts to be open to the spiritual journey as it unfolds.  The purpose of this prayer is the journey of the heart.  It is not a matter of rushing through the prayers to get them all done.

2

Choose a Rosary That Inspires Prayer

Choose a rosary that is comfortable to pray with or one with sentimental value.  Rosary beads are to keep track of the prayers.  It should be easy to hold onto as our hands move across the beads in prayer.  A comfortable, meaningful rosary will help free our minds and hearts to meditate on the prayers and the mysteries.

3

Choose a Time and Place to Pray

It can be easy to fall asleep during prayers if it is low on the list of priorities for the day.  Try planning the day around it.  It helps to have a consistent time and place to pray.  Some find praying and driving as distracting as texting and driving.  Why not try: taking a rosary walk, praying in church before or after Mass, praying with a group (even if it is virtual), praying after meals, or praying while rocking a baby to sleep?

Choosing a time of day or a liturgical season like Lent is also a good way to begin a habit of prayer that lasts all year long.

4

Manage Distractions

It is easy to have distractions during this prayer.  Instead of feeling disappointed, we can make an effort to stop and refocus our attention.  It also helps to say a quick prayer, asking for the grace to focus.

Familiar prayers can also help give us the focus of the heart that we need to draw closer to God.

5

Remember Patience

We need to remember to be as gentle and patient with ourselves as God is with us.  It will take time to establish a routine of praying the rosary, but it will be well worth the effort.  We can find a deep inner calm as we make this journey of the heart.

Bonus Tip

The most important thing is to not get discouraged when you miss a day or two of prayer. Start small, find what works for you, and then build on that.
