Mother Teresa praying the rosary

Mother Teresa encouraged the use of The Flying Novena, also known as The Express Novena, The Emergency Novena, and The Memorare Novena. It is a quick prayer for difficult times.

The Flying Novena: Prayers

Pray the Memorare prayer nine times in a row.  You can do it by starting on the second bead of a rosary decade, or with a Memorare Novena Chaplet.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known

that anyone who fled to your protection,

implored your help or sought your intercession

was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence,

I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.

To you do I come; before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate,

despise not my petitions,

but in your mercy hear and answer me.

Amen

History of the Prayer

The Memorare is a shorter version of a 15th-century prayer. It asks for divine assistance through Mary’s help.

Mother Teresa would say this prayer with her religious sisters for concerns or for times of great urgency. It was not like a typical novena with one prayer each day for nine days.  They would pray the Memorare nine times in a row and then add an extra one to thank God for the favours received.
