St. Joseph Prayers
(from the Year of St. Joseph)
You can find St. Joseph prayers from the Year of St. Joseph. (Pope Francis declared The Year of St. Joseph from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021.)
Official Prayer for the Year of St. Joseph
The original version of this prayer is in an encyclical by Pope Leo XIII in 1889 entitled Quamquam Pluries. Pope Francis recommended that we add it to the end of the Rosary prayer, especially during October, the month of the Holy Rosary.
Ad te beate Joseph
1.
To you, O Blessed Joseph, do we come in our afflictions, and having implored the help of your most holy spouse, we confidently invoke your patronage also.
Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by His Blood and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.
2.
O most watchful Guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ;
O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence;
O most mighty protector, be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness.
3.
A you once rescued the Child Jesus from deadly pearil, so now protect God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven.
Amen
Prayer recommended by Pope Francis
Concluding his apostolic letter, Patris corde, Pope Francis recommended this prayer.
Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you, God entrusted His only Son. In you, Mary placed her trust. With you, Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us, too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, and defend us from every evil.
Amen
Another Year of St. Joseph Prayer
Pope Francis introduced a beloved prayer in the footnotes of his apostolic letter. He mentioned that he has recited this prayer following Lauds (Morning Prayer) daily for over 40 years. It is taken from a nineteenth-century French prayer book of the Congregation of the Sisters of Jesus and Mary.
1.
Glorious patriarch Saint Joseph, whose power makes the impossible possible, come to my aid in these times of anguish and difficulty.
Take under your protection the serious and difficult situations that I commend to you, that they may have a happy outcome.
2.
My beloved father, all my trust is in you. Let it not be said that I invoked you in vain, and since you can do everything with Jesus and Mary, show me your goodness is as great as your power.
Amen

Art
Raphael painted The Sistine Madonna circa (1513-1514). We made circular cut-outs from the original image.
We chose this painting of St. Joseph handing the Child Jesus to His Mother as our featured image. Bartolome Esteban Murillo painted it circa 1665.
Julius Frank painted Jesus, Mary & Joseph in 1908.
The endearing image of St. Joseph consoling the Child Jesus (which we chose to accompany the official prayer for the Year of St. Joseph) is one of the works of art by Charles Bosseron Chambers circa the early 20th Century. He was popularly known as the Norman Rockwell of Catholic art.
Bartolome Esteban Murillo painted “Den heliga familjens återkomst från Egypten” circa 17th Century. It accompanies the first prayer to Saint Joseph.
Juan Simon Gutierrez painted The Holy Family circa the 17th Century.
Bartolome Esteban Murillo painted St. Joseph and the Child Jesus circa 1670 to 1675.
The painting of St. Joseph and the Christ Child is also by Murillo. He painted it sometime during his lifetime.
