How to Gain a Plenary Indulgence During the Year of St. Joseph
During The Year of Saint Joseph, there are several opportunities for plenary indulgences. Some requirements are the same as for all indulgences. In particular, these are sacramental Confession, the Eucharist, and prayers for the Pope’s intentions, namely The Apostles’ Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. They are for Christians with a spirit of detachment from sin.
What is an Indulgence?
In short, an indulgence is a powerful grace that helps repair the damage from sin. What is the difference between plenary and partial indulgences? What are the effects of sin? Are there some examples of indulgences? Click to learn more.
We can receive an indulgence when we participate in the Year of Saint Joseph as recommended by the Apostolic Penitentiary.
Prayer
Meditate for at least 30 minutes on the Lord’s Prayer (Our Father) or take part in a spiritual retreat. A retreat needs to be at least one day long with a meditation on St. Joseph with the goals of rediscovering our filial relationship with the Father, renewing our fidelity to prayer, and profoundly discerning God’s will for us.
Pray the Family Rosary
Recite the Holy Rosary in families and among engaged couples. This is to recreate the atmosphere of intimate communion, love, and prayer that was in the Holy Family.
Recite the Litany
Pray the Litany to St. Joseph (or the Akathistos to St. Joseph for the Byzantine tradition) for the persecuted Church and the relief of Christians suffering persecution.
Works of Mercy
Perform a spiritual or corporal work of mercy following the example of Saint Joseph. We come to the aid of others in their spiritual and bodily necessities. Read #2447 (Catechism of the Catholic Church) to learn more.
Protection of St. Joseph & the Unemployed
Entrust daily activities to the protection of St. Joseph and invoke his intercession so that those seeking dignifying work can find it.
Special Days
Say any legitimately approved prayer or act of piety in honour of Saint Joseph, especially on The Feast of Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary (March 19), The Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker (May 1), The Feast of the Holy Family (Sunday, December 27, 2021), and on the traditional days dedicated to the memory of St. Joseph (the 19th of each month and every Wednesday).
Shut-ins
Those who are legitimately unable to leave their homes, the sick, the elderly, and the dying, can receive the indulgence if they have the intention of fulfilling, as soon as possible, the usual conditions. Once they recite an act of piety (devout prayer) in honour of St. Joseph, offering God the pains and hardships of their lives, they can receive the indulgence.
